The Polish Konik horses are back in the meadow!
Today, we released 13 Polish Konik mares in the vicinity of Gródek, Podlasie. The horses will probably stay on this plot until November, at which point we will transport them to our field station in Kalitnik. During the grazing season, the Polish Konik horses play a vital role as natural lawnmowers, shaping an optimal habitat for Charadriiformes. By grazing on vegetation, they facilitate the birds' access to insects, and their hooves help compact the ground. These are the first animals transported by us and as the water level decreases and the area becomes drier, more animals will be moved to the meadows. We currently own around 100 Polish Konik horses and we cooperate with farmers who also graze their horses and Polish Red cows on our land.
